Wow, I've never seen a vase like this. Really nice. Those applied flowers really take the cake.

I'll just have to sit back and watch this thread to see what happens. I hope someone knows something about this.

It's not genuine Chinese, but it is genuine Japanese, early 20th century. It says Great Japan in the right column, and it is a form of Satsuma ware.

The lower character in the right column is 'made', but I can't work out the makers name, not one I recognise.

...Looks like it would be Hido or possibly Akuto, not names I have come across for Satsuma previously. If you can post a square on image of the mark I'll add it to the database and see if I can get someone else to reference it.

is there a technical japanese name for the applied flowers? Moriage, I guess or no?

Moriage is liquid clay, like tube lining. Can't say I have come across a specific name for applied decoration on Satsuma, but I guess there probably is one.

I don't think your vase is Satsuma pottery, which is recognisable as a fine crackle glaze earthenware and opaque. If it is translucent then it is porcelain, perhaps from Arita, Japan.

It is Kyo-Yaki Satsuma, a well known form, uses the same cream clay base but painted in a different style.

Thanks for correcting my misconception. In fact I think you've identified a teapot which I've owned for years and is very similar in style of decoration and body.

I just realized, isn't the painting style of the flowers and leaves the same as what we always call Seto?
Though the enamel is much less thick, so I don't know what that means.

Seto is a city in Japan noted for ceramics
