I inherited an old painting and would like to know more about it. Painter? Age? Possible price? It has been with my parents for over 50 years and they bought it at an auction.
It's really beautifully done and a really old oil painting :)
    Thanks for help!!

Welcome @Juho T . It is a decorative painting, which means you may never know who painted it. Maybe another member can find out more for you.
It was probably relatively new when your parents bought it.
    Its value is decorative value.

I was afraid that this was the case. I've been looking at it almost all my life and thought it might be worth selling one day..
Maybe I'm not the only one :)
It's beautiful despite everything and gets to stay on the wall of my house waiting for my own children to be disappointed in its value one day:)

Name looks like Gotschi, which is German. This style of painting is not that old, so I agree it was probably new when your parents bought it. Do you have a picture of the back?

Now that I looked behind the painting myself.. it really isn't that old. Thanks for the advice.
(This painting was not the masterpiece of a long-lost artist:))

...I just realized I said it wrong.
This truly is a masterpiece by a long-lost artist!;)

A dancer is always a graceful subject.:)
In that case it is probably Götschi, a Swiss name. Which doesn't necessarily mean it is the painter's real name.

(The Swiss are rather sensitive about being called German.:shame:)

Hahaa. Thanks for the back photo. Those triangle pieces over the corners confirm a mass-made decorative painting. Those were sold through furniture stores and the like.

I asked Google and it said German. I don't know all surnames on my own unfortunately. :hilarious: I didn't ask with an umlat since I didn't see one. Of course doesn't mean the person has a name matching nationality either.

I know, impossible to know. Swiss surnames often end in an 'i', but of course so do Italian and other surnames.;)
True, the person could be American, for instance.;)

Some of these decorative paintings are sold on cruises. My cousin used to go on them each year and bought paintings. They were made in such large quantities they aren't terribly valuable. Right now there's a resurgence in Mid-Century Modern and I see paintings like this selling to the folks who are redecorating in that style.

Also, I might add, at 75, 50 years ago doesn't sound that long to me!

Nice frame! I think that I'd guess 1950s on this one and new when bought.
