This started as a vintage home-made table. It's dated 9/9/1959, with a name and a neighborhood in Los Angeles.

I don't know for sure but I think it may be a Madrone tree. If so, it's a big one.

I took the legs off and converted it to a wall hanging.

We have (good-natured) disagreement in my family whether this should be considered art.

I'd be curious to hear your all's opinions.

I'd put it in with shadow boxes containing real pinned butterflies, or the rose murex I have that is mounted for table top display. More specimen of the beauty of the natural world than the product of artifice. I think your slab looks great as wall decor.

    Ditto.
It doesn't have to be art to be beautiful.:)

An' it certainly needn't be beautiful to be art!
Form follows function...an' function is beauty.

My parents had a clock with that kind of wood many years ago.
It was huge. Wasn't my cup o tea but they liked it.

Well, I consider it art, since a human being took natural materials and manipulated them into something aesthetically pleasing, then put it in a spot as such. No different from using pigments, tools, wood and cotton fibers to make a painting.

I'd consider it "displayed as art."

The beauty of the natural element has been transformed by human hands and displayed to be seen outside of its normal setting. Creativity has been used for it to be looked at in a different way. It is art.

I'd file it with mineral samples, geodes, fossils etc. Somebody did a PILE of work to turn that tree slice into a table. I'd classify it more as an artifact than as art per se. It definitely looks good on a wall.

The lamp is more ...art !

Yes, in this application and finish, I would call it "art" along with the lamp! :)

BUT......the mere fact that he thought about it artistically, and artistically manipulated the piece (removed the legs and hung it next to a beautiful AND matching color-wise lamp)....I'd call an artistic response and therefore (in my novice way) call it art!!!!!!! JMHO!!!:happy::happy::happy::):):)
