    Hi folks,
Can anyone shed any light on this photo on board obviously celebrating Queen Victoria diamond jubilee. It all looks from the period, so could it be a genuine photo (it looks it) and what was it's likely purpose? Souvenir maybe, or something more official for friends/relatives? Is Queen Victoria in it?

it looks like the board was just marking the year, and the photo while period is not of any royals.

    Hi,
Victoria is not one of the person shown. She was in Widow ware since Albert died. besides she was a tiny woman.

Thanks so some unknown persons in the photo is what you're saying, just using a celebration board?

This site explains that the jubilee was also a "Festival of the British Empire"
It states vendors were selling souvenir items.
I think what you have is a photo of a family that attended. Much as we take photos of ourselves in places we go.

I think the fade outline say there was once a different picture on the board

All very interesting, I do think maybe it's someone celebrating the special day then, but if it's a different photo then thats a bit odd, maybe someone felt like they should have celebrated in some way but didn't.

The Diamond Jubilee was an excuse to sell all sorts of things, so odds are the photo is original to the board. It just marks the year it was taken, 1898, rather than having anything actually to do with the Queen.

Not sure where the 1898 comes from.
The article I referenced says Tuesday, June 22, 1897. So I would think that would be the date most likely it was taken, give or take a few days.

I wonder if the fade marks you are referencing are outlines for different size pictures to be laid out, without having to measure and center. I think I see lines along the picture.
Don't know if you were able to buy different size pictures back in 1897 or not though.

There were photographs of all sizes, even then, all the way up to a small poster size. I was thinking she was crowned in 1838, but she did succeed in 1837. On the other hand, if this is American, the photographer may still have been using up old stock, so who knows.

Hi all, thanks again for the input. Yes the date is 1897, the year of the diamond jubilee, can't verify the photo is original to the period but I'd be surprised if not just by looking at it.

The board, and i would imagine the photo, is UK. Appletongate, newark is written bottom right and this is a town near Nottingham UK.

In the bottom left is a name, F. Bayles along with the word photo. Not sure if this has any relevance, but maybe he was a photographer that produced this in appletongate? Finally, in bottom right is a company name, probably the board producer, m.b. & co G ? I guess these printed names on the board give some clues to the origin of this item, but I've been unable to find much about anything on them.

I've also not seen another photo board like this, which makes the item a little unusual despite the ambiguity of the photo.

PS I think the lines drawn out above probably were to indicate mounting photos of different sizes, so well spotted.
