The webbing to the top has the faint stencilled letters DETONATORS.

Box is 7.5 inch square and 4.75 inch deep

Th inside of the box has been line with wood (original or later?) while the staple to the hasp and staple may be a replacement.

Can't see any marking to the box other than the stencil on the webbing.

Was this military and when and for who??

Looks like a bit of mining or quarrymans equipment, I'd expect a multi holed frame inside to hold the standard pencil detonators, rather than having them rattle around loose in the box.

Might be Railways before BR, they use detonators on the tracks for warnings.

I found a box like that along the tracks once full of railroad torpedos

So they do it for fun?
    Isn't it dangerous?
What a cool old train, though.

That's a bunch of railway preservation people having a bit of a laugh with some surplus detonators and their preserved engine. Under no normal circumstances would anyone use so many, one two or three would be warnings of increasing degrees of urgency of the existance of a problem ahead and the need to slow down or stop.

There is not always a girl with red petticoats around to warn the engine driver.

Now af, be good. We all know that Jenny will be waving her red petticoat if needed.
