Hello, I would like to date an old brooch (the pin is missing). It looks quite old but is it 19th century (or earlier)? It depicts a dragon or a mythical beast and looks like it might have been surrounded by some sort of stones at one point. 5cm x 4.5cm. Many thanks for any suggestions.

My first thought was "wyvern", which might be UK.

Looks like it's missing a whole lot of rhinestones.

Thirded, but those can be replaced.
Nice piece. Datewise I think ca 1910-1920.

Looks like brass? What is the little flap of metal on the upper left? One of the "stone settings" on right seems to be double-punched or just damaged. Maybe something was broken off? I wouldn't suggest putting any time or stones into it.

It's a Frankenstein piece, the back piece appears to be a copy from an original mystery object. The circle with the dragon was a separate piece soldered to the cast back piece. Impossible to date original construction time.

Hello, thanks very much for your comment. The little flap of metal at the back is what used to hold the pin I think as on the other side there is a rusty lump which would have been the hinge (better photo enclosed).
