I saw this at the antiques fair today and decided I didn’t know enough about it. I took photos with the sellers permission.
It’s steel not silver except for the pencil that he says isn’t original. He said it was cut steel and c1790.Would that look to be accurate?
Im not thinking of buying but he was asking £100.

    Thanks for looking :)

No way is that late 18th. Not cut steel either. It looks late 19th plate to my eye, if that. It's also not a proper chatelaine: those had keys and other useful stuffs for the housekeeper or lady of the manor. That's just decorative with an odd hodge podge of dangles.

I’m seeing some with the horseshoe pin cushion. They have scissors, keys, and sewing items.

I did wonder but it’s taken me on an interesting little journey looking at chatelaines.
I no longer believe what sellers tell me, I come on here to check!
Another interesting thing to keep an eye out for though.

It has a little notepad too, with the pencil. I'd wonder if the writing sheets are ivory or celluloid or what.

If it’s still there next week I can have a look as I’d like to know that too but I didn’t think to look closely. I can see lines on it but don’t know if they are celluloid lines or Ivory.

The one on the left side of pic is for getting marrow from a bone and it’s too expensive! IMO! But I like the shape of whatever metal it is.

Yes, they probably are. Conceivably something like Celluloid.

I think the second from left is to assist with buttons

I can see how it might work in that capacity. I can also think of ways it might not work.

Nice. If you buy it and can turn the horse shoe so it faces up for good luck.

The chatelaine likely belonged to a nurse, the item to the left of the button hook would be a spatula, for applying ointments or as a tongue depressor...

I thought it was a paper knife. Would a nurse need a pincushion ready to hand?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Not the best to try to enlarge, but sure looks like there could be schreger lines in that little notepad....

Schreger lines are the ones that look like crosshatching. You only see them on pieces cut in cross section. The leaves were sliced going the long way. They have characteristic lines that are roughly parallel, not called Schreger lines.
