Another bargain box find, I have no clue what the design on this is supposed to be, any ideas please? It's just marked Silver on the bail and is the same both sides hence only one photo.
There's a name for that cross with double bars...an' I get the bird-like image, but its orientation isn't consistent with the cross or pendant hang...an' no body, wings or feet. Something else is represented in this piece, imho, an' I think that cross is a key.
Think there is turquoise that has this look of crushed bits in an artificial matrix. I associate it with China, but my associations may or may not be reliable. Pretty piece. Not convinced it is meant to be representational, despite the eagle & the cross.
Careful. If you set your standard that low, you'll be yielding to everyone. I'm not ruling out symbolism, just know how our brains always try to make sense, even when there isn't any.
Really? All that flamboyant detail for the bird...an' only the most rudimentary of outlines for the reptile? C'mon...I just don't see it, at all.
I have not done any looking, but I own enough of the stuff from Mexico that whenever I see crushed turquoise like this, my first thought is Mexico.
I think it is Mexican. In the first half of the 20th century Mexican silver was sometimes marked 'silver', just like this pendant is. I can't say for certain if the shape next to the eagle is a warclub, but it doesn't look like a lizard to me.
