You know those nails with the criss-cross netting pattern on top of the nailhead? I was once told those were modern picture frame nails, but I've also seen them on multiple pieces of furniture from the early 20th century. I'm curious to understand an approximate date when those nails started to appear. Anyone have a book or something that could help with this?
Well Madam or Sir as the case may be, do allow me to explain. The pattern may in fact be due to the hammer, set, or drift used rather than the fasteners. Note my trusty Craftsman with meat-tenderizing-like non-slip Head. Why your keepsakes May be a product of our very shop! That can of course be determined forensically if necessary, but as they say in the movies: “That’s not important right now!”
I was using similar looking nails to nail boards on a barn last month. This article covers a lot of info on nails but I don't know that it will answer your exact question.
