I haven't tried polishing the metal filigree surrounding this bowl yet. It's mostly turned dark and dull, but has silvery areas on the bottom. Could it be silver-plated?

Any thoughts on it's origin and age? I didn't see any marks.

Also, is there any special terminology for glass items inset in metal filigree like this?

    Try electroform as a term.

several companies made similar glass with this bar/rib/column/notched motif. I'd say this one is likely Westmoreland #15 c1891-1905; AKA: Bamboo Column, Pioneer #15, Cut Log...

found this eBay listing (sans the metal filigree) noted as a puff box:

Westmorland 15 is what I see also. The filigree is likely an add by a distributor. It sure makes the gall pattern hard to see.

Wow, you guys are good! I looked more closely at the glass and it does, indeed, look exactly like Westmorland #15. Thank you so much!

The eBay listing calls it a "puff box." Is that Westmoreland's terminology? Was this meant to hold powder?

I don't see any signs of rust, so should it be safe to wash this? I'm thinking I'd use regular dishwashing liquid and then when it's dry a sunshine cloth for the metal.

I don't have a silver testing kit... is there a way I can tell if the metal is silver-plated?

Yes, dry it down and set it out to finish air drying. Don't let the water sit on it.
