Hard to tell from photographs alone, they have been faked since they were issued.

There are many specialist medal sites that deal with these.

Google "WWI Iron cross fake or real" and read similar posts like yours.

thank you! I've searched for such stuff, but since the cross isn't in my hands I can't decide.

I have heard that a good starting point is to see if it is magnetic. Many copies are made of a look alike alloy that isn't magnetic. Another little test is to take a piece of paper and try and insert it under the raised rim, from the middle of the cross. The genuine ones were made with the middle section being a separate piece of metal, so a piece of paper should just slide underneath.

    If in doubt don't buy.
There are many genuine medals for sale by reputable dealers.

    I think it is original.

Many of those around - 5.200.000 awarded in WW I. Not much value in these, so no big incentive to fake these.

If you want to be 100% certain go to www.wehrmacht-awards.com and ask in the subform Imperial German Awards. You will have multiple knowledgable replies very quickly.

Whilst I agree with Frank_138 regarding the lack of incentive to fake these, that is in itself no reason not to be suspicious. I have even seen faked No.4 'spike' bayonets. Why when originals sell for as little as £20 $25, it surely wasn't worth the time and investment, especially with over 5 million being produced, they are not usually rare or especially valuable, but that didn't stop someone in China or India doing it. The tapered steel scabbards were difficult to produce back in WWII, leading to the adoption of an easier to produce tubular steel scabbard, but that didn't stop the fakers either, they copied the original scabbard including the markings!

For what it is worth, the medal, judging of course solely on the photograph, looks to me to be genuine. But then again, I am not a medal guy.....
