Tried my luck at another jewellery purchase today. I didn't go looking for it, as I was kind of put off by my last embarrassing failure. It just caught my eye in the under counter display while i was paying for something else. The necklace has a barrel clasp which I think is machine made, as it is very precisely finished. Cant find anything that resembles it much online.

Nice, fifties into sixties. I’d have grabbed it too.

I know NOTHING about jewelry, except what I like to wear. That said, the chain on this necklace does not look original. I'm guessing the original chain would have been shorter so that the necklace laid across the throat. Either the chain gave out or the wearer didn't like calling attention to their neck (like me) and a different one was added. THAT newer chain looks like gold to me, maybe even real gold??

What do you all think? Am I wrong about this?

I agree that the chain could have been retro fitted as it is a mismatch in colour. Its not gold though. It is tarnished for starters. I would say it is brass.

I’ve got necklaces like that, and the push in clasp is older too. It’s possible that one company made the diamanté part, I suppose and the chain was added by another.

Seconded. It could be original, or someone might have swapped the chain out early on. Probably gold-filled if the jump rings aren't soldered shut.

The jump rings aren't soldered. Wouldn't it be much brighter if it was gold filled? It looks really dull and flat.

...now. If it was gold-plated and worn down to brass it could look dull. It could have been plain brass to begin with.
