Copper 1.jpg Copper 2.jpg Copper 3.jpg Copper 4.jpg I have a copper piece I have been researching a bit. Looks Turkish but could possibly be Persian. If anyone has a better guess please let me know. Also, if anyone has any idea as to the ballpark value of something like this I would certainly like to know. I have seen similar pieces all around Turkey and the prices vary greatly. I have two others that are more everyday, less ornate and fairly old.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums!

I can't make out the mark well enough to even try to ID it. I have seen a few of this type of Turkish covered dishes that the sellers are calling Turkish Delights (lokum) serving dishes. They are saying Turkish delights in these covered dishes are served with coffee. I have no idea if the sellers are right or wrong. I haven't seen one with the same design as yours, but some are ornate and others not. Here are examples:

Thank you! A lot of the lokum dishes are smaller since typically you will get one or two pieces of it with your coffee though we eat lokum like popcorn at our house:). I have owned a couple of those smaller ones purchased at the copper section of the Grand Bazaar for way cheap, even by Grand Bazaar standards. Some times the larger ones used as serving dishes are mistaken for lokum dishes but my experience has been that the lokum dishes tend to be rather small to medium in size. The everyday ones tend to be pretty plain and it isn't common for the tops to get separated from the dish itself and lost. I have two of those that came from the kitchen of my wife's grandparents both the lids and the dishes themselves. I have not ruled out anything at this point because I just don't know. If I had to guess I would say something for the dining table perhaps. It is pretty heavy and ornate so someone once said it could have been made for commercial use or for a tourist market. That made sense. There is a tughra (Ottoman seal) stamped into its rim but I have learned to never get too excited about that, as it was used post-Ottoman Empire. It was especially used to attract tourist buyers at one point. It is still used today in reproductions, so judging the age of copper pieces can be difficult. It is just one of those things sitting in plain sight that makes you wonder when you look at it. :) Thank you again. Lokum dish is still on the list of possibilities.
