Featured Cool find, but will I be able to sell it on Ebay?

Got this last weekend at a sale, digging through a box with otherwise uninteresting items. (Late in the day, too...3pm at a 9am sale.) My heart leapt when I saw this adorable antique looking girl doll, with a cat no less!

I wasn't sure exactly what it was... the entire doll is a cloth print, but it was an absolute no brainer to get it.

Once home I spotted this on the back, now easy to look up!

It's almost 100 years old! However, not sure how I'm going to sell it. Didn't Ebay ban most Aunt Jemima auctions? When I go in I see 2 or 3 Aunt Jemima items sold, a cookie jar, something else, but that's it. But I think there used to be thousands. So wonder if I can sell this on Ebay?

Googling it, I learned that she came in a set of the whole family but I think this one would be of particular interest because she has such a sweet look and is holding a cat. I'm of partial mind to keep it for a while.

Interesting how some replace history with their fantasies

I find nothing in their 'rules' that would prohibit it

There was a lot of discussion about Ebay banning Aunt Jemima items right after the company changed the label. Ebay was pulling listings, this was July 2020. Same like the Dr. Seuss books.

Didn't know if they were still removing Aunt J. listings, etc. I suppose I could list and just see what happens. Thanks. :)

Ebay and Etsy both removed A J listings, but I think some still slip thru. A great find Lucille.

Really nice face and details, looks appropriately aged. I like it.
Please let us know if it gets sold or pulled! :)

There are currently 869 listings for "Black Americana doll"
I would not use any words in my listing referencing Aunt Jemima, it has strong enough merit to sell own.

Awesome info @Sdcookie2 ! I wasn't sure on possible value, this is so helpful.

Also interesting to learn these were an advertising premium. Thank you. :)

Not that I sell on ebay, (or anywhere else for that matter:() but was wondering about using terminology something like 'black early americana' ??? I still have that basket-full of those various sizes and named adorable black dolls that someone went to a lot of work to make!! But mine aren't Advertising or Early, like above!! THAT item is REALLY GREAT!!!!!

You are very welcome. I wanted to add that this piece doesn't seem to violate the eBay policy.

    Here is the policy:

We are continuing to evolve our Offensive Materials Policy to specify that certain items are prohibited. This includes items in the Black Americana category that portray negativity or stereotypes based on race or ethnicity, such as items that use caricatures or demeaning portrayals which may be seen on dolls, figurines, housewares, historical advertisements.

Yeah good advice by sdcookie I'd avoid the Aj & Ba

Very interesting that the picture shown from the auction, doesn't show the head at all, probably a reason for that

    I'd be cautious

    The doll is absolutely adorable!

    As is Charlie's figrine.

Isn't it truely a shame that those who are black are denied access to buying parts of their culture as it was once lived. Wrongly at that, but still history.

When I was at Sedlers, our black memorabilia was sold primarily to those of a dark skin color. It should still be available to them today too, or anyone else who likes it.

I would buy that doll for her sweetness. Aunt Jemima was always presented as someone loving, smiling and kind.

    History can not be unwritten.

I wonder if a museum would want your doll?

I think you can sell it on etsy with the AJ label.

I think it best not to put it on etsy because the bots are crazy there now and the site is having so many glitches that it could drive any sane seller bonkers. I am on vacay there but reading the forums is an eye opener of the disfunction of that place.

In addition, etsy many times goes with no warming, one mistake and your shop is closed or suspended. And customer service does not exist there to talk like ebay has.

I know there are many AJ items on etsy now but if it were me, I would not risk it.

For what it's worth found a site on Etsy that's selling 'black memorabilia' (and I didn't have to look hard!) with not bad prices and lots of different items.....if one is looking for how they're listed and what prices are...........just sayin'............
