    Good evening,
Bought my first compass, however, after purchasing it, came across the fact that there are lots of replicas around.
I would appreciate your thoughts on what type of compass is, if it’s an original, how old, and what does the red symbol represent?
How can one identify the originals compared to the replicas?
Any websites to educate me would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Simona

    replica, of what?

the Barr that stops the hand from moving is a nice touch , for a compass that was on the move....
it looks vintage 60's...maybe German....made to work , not sit on a desk...
    does it unscrew....
    what size is it..

I will measure it tomorrow, it should not be bigger than 5 centimetres circumference.
I have no idea how to open it, I will try to unscrew it anti-clockwise, I suppose.
Most of the compasses I started reading about on EBay and Etsy were having replica in their description, very confusing for a newbie.
It was sold a navy compass, is this true?
Will come back to you shortly.
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Simona

Nothing to do with any navy
    Maybe marketed to girl scouts
    Occupied Japan or Germany
    You do NOT open it

It is around 5 centimetres including the sliding button, please see below.
I have tried to gently unscrew the top, but it does not move at all, looks like is fixed or glued.
One last question, what is the red logo in the shape of fleur de lis?
    Thank you.

    Thank you so much!
I wonder if you have a chance to send me a link to a similar one, or any link with basics about compasses.

This may not be the informative about YOUR compass link you want, but I found it to be interesting as to where "true north" is located, how a compass works and how elevation can affect the accuracy of a compass:
