Coins and what to do with them

One of these days I'm going to get around to dealing with some coins I inherited. As with many things, I'm not really interested in learning enough about coin collecting to satisfy grading etc for real collectors. Many of the coins are American if I remember correctly and 20th C. When we were dividing them up after my parents died, my sister made piles based on how pretty she though they were and we drew lots so we were all equally clueless. It's not a huge number of coins.

Anyway.....other than scanning and then offering on Ebay etc, where do you usually go to dispose of them? I'd be fine with sending worn silver quarters and dimes to melt. Pawn shop?

You will have to check the dates and mintmarks even on the worn ones.

After checking I`d list the Quarters and Dimes on ebay as scrap silver bulk lots.

Davey do you think it's worth it? After paying the Ebay fees would it make more sense to just send them off for melt myself? I haven't sent anything off recently but they pay 90% of the actual silver content in coins.

Its up to you but I always find buyers on ebay pay more than melt.
Let me know the dates and mintmarks and I`ll check for scarce ones for you.

Hmm well that's really nice of you. I just snapped a few photos and I see that I started labeling some once upon a time. I'll have to spend some time sorting I guess.

You have a nice US Morgan silver dollar with a CC mint mark encapsulated in a special GSA government holder. This is a valuable coin
Check your Morgans against this list.
    http://www.coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=832

You will get a minimum $20-$25 per common Morgan.
    The 1875 "S" Twenty Cent is a minimum $100

    Washington Quarters dated 1932 "D" & "S" are a minumum $175
There are many worth a premium with Doubled Die obverses

I`d be going through them with a fine toothcomb.

LOL that's what I was afraid of:). Sometimes, you know, you just want something to be uncomplicated:D

This CC Morgan in box is 1883 so not on the "special" list.

The other Morgans in clear packets are also not on the list so common I guess.
    1889 no mint
    1921 S
    1892 O (2)
    1901 O
    1878 S (I think)
    1881 S

You're going to need some high-tech prognostication equipment to help with those difficult decisions:

Haha! Well maybe it's a good job for a long winter day.

Still...it's not like I don't already have about a million other things to sort and deal with:D.

I wonder if there's a coin shop around here. Something else to look into I guess. Sigh:confused:

Terry I don't know that I've ever set foot in a coin shop but I'm assuming that any of them would give, at best, a wholesale price.

If I decide to do Ebay again I'd be back to wondering how many buyers might try to do a switch and return etc what with Ebay's liberal refund policy. Or have they changed something? I've just been buying for the last year so that's not an issue.

I`ve bought & sold coins on eBay for over 12 years, sold em all over the world, never had a switcheroo ever.
Had one or two untracked go missing in the early days.

I agree with Terry, forget taking them to a dealer.

Thanks Davey, good to know. I'd have guessed it might be field where it might be an issue.
