Civil War portrait painting on metal help

    Lady I bought this from said it is civil war era, from New Hampshire or Maine area. Looks like it's painted on tin. Anyone see these paintings before? Is it something they did during Civil War? Looks like Ulysses Grant. Anyone can identify him. Might have to post this in militaria

    I think it is a painted tintype -- painted over a photographic image. The metal is iron, if so. The word "tintype" is a common name for these. It can be tested with a magnet. If it is attracted,it is iron and a tintype (also called ferrotype, a more accurate name.
