This measures 47 1/2" x 11 3/4". I don't know what to call it. The design is raised...the wood around it was filed down. Some kind of wood scroll?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I'd call it a very nice looking either Chinese or Japanese panel, but also know nothing about them!!!

It looks like it is made of split sections of bamboo.

I hate to say this, but I wonder whether this is just a decorative table runner.

I was thinking the same way. Hot plate.

I, too, think that's what this is - also sometimes called a Table Mat.

    Agree, bamboo, and table runner.
The subject is classic Chinese, the Eight Noble Horses. It has to do with achievement in different fields, I don't remember the details.

Hi kraftblue, Agree bamboo and whatever you want to use it for. At times in China prayers, poetry and incantations were recorded on strips of bamboo and tied together to make a hard wearing scroll or book. They were often kept in libraries and would have been quite valuable at the time. Single messages were also conveyed this way.
Yours is a modern adaptation for home decoration.

Yes, bamboo horizontal hand scroll, Chinese, just a decorative piece, mass produced. The horses are after painter XU Beihong (see pic below for original painting). Value for this piece is in the eye of the beholder --- if you get hold of an original XU Beihong, that would be quite valuable :)
