Chinese wood carving panel. Vintage? Antique?

    Wondering if this carving would be vintage or antique. Obviously the outer frame is vintage, looks 1960s/70s, but I don't believe these two started out together. The wood panel is attached by a couple of wires through the back of the piece. I didn't include a photo of the back of the frame, it's just paper covered. My guess is someone mounted this in the 60s/70s. Can anyone date the carving or tell me anything about it?

    Some Asian characters here, but kind of muddled, thinking just part of the decoration, not likely a signature, right?

    It is an antique panel and very nice quality.
    When I was in Hongkong in the early 70s these antique panels were cheaper than newly carved ones.;)
    Probably a description of the scene, or background information of the (hi)story. These panels weren't signed.

    How panels like yours were used, these examples are from Penang, Malaysia:
