DSCF5044small.jpg It's not a peach and it sure isn't a durian. The critter is a mongoose, but I can't figure out the other piece.

That's a good possibility. A bit out of scale for a mongoose, but since when does art have to be to scale?

I think just a gourd. Maybe an eggplant. The animal could be a rat.

It has a fluffy tail that you can't see in this shot, so definitely anything except a rat.

She WOULD mention Chinese eggplant! The local huge pan-Asian grocery is one of those places I have to avoid. Otherwise, they give Whole Paycheck a run for its money in the wallet-emptying department. Exotic produce, my favorite teas, every noodle known to man, really cool candies ... darned place hoovers the money out of your pocket in no time flat. (and now I'm jonesing for a hit.)

I send my friends with celiac disease down there in my place. Rice noodles, tapioca noodles, buckwheat noodles. Lots of goodies with no gluten in sight. Gluten free costs crazy money anyway. And now I seriously want stir-fried eggplant with soba noodles etc... dagnabbit!

Ruth, by any chance, do you have an OCEAN STATE JOB LOTS store anywhere near you?

It's an ugly, awful store in many ways, but the FOOD section is a major WOW! for those who "eat all the weird stuff"... (No fresh foods, however.)

Bob's Red Mill, all sorts of packaged Asian import foods (soba & umpteen other kinds of noodles...) cool Italian imported stuff, and lots of other things I wouldn't otherwise be able to find in my part of NH.

My daughter is basically dairy-free vegan, but add to that an allergy to CORN, and sometimes it's hard to find anything she can eat. (Check out the labels: almost EVERYTHING has some sort of corn product in it!)

We make the trip to Ocean State at least a couple of times a month to pick up food for her. My husband HATES the place & refuses to even go in the door, but DD & I make it "an adventure"... (Note: the company's jingle says YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE! - it's a VERY annoying jingle - almost as annoying as the repeated, recorded announcements from the overly cheerful, chirpy woman who "announces" the store's specials while you shop!)

Yep. I was in there last week, buying stocking stuffers. I.e. chocolate.... It's about a mile from my house. They have all the oddments you never knew you needed. It's where I get my ground almonds for a Christmas cookie called Zimtsterne, made from ground almonds, powdered sugar, egg whites and of course cinnamon.

Are you sure it is Chinese? To me, it looks not like a Chinese handcraft.

We go to the one in Chatham. They have the most eclectic food assortment. Our Macedonian girls were thrilled this summer to find their dry soup mixes. Every other week or so my son or I will say OSJL road trip and off we go.
