This wooden panel came into the family in Germany in the early 1990s as a gift from someone who visited China more than once. An accompanying note just calls it a "temple carving".

We have heard that these pieces are basically the result of temples being destroyed and dismembered. Can anyone say more, or point me towards reference resources? Who are the figures, what is the scene?

The panel is approximately 30 x 15 cm:

Some are panels from a bridal bed or dowry chests, but there are more that were part of partition walls or courtyard panels.
Every time a house was restored, panels were replaced. I have a few from a Peranakan house on Java. Peranakan is the same as Straits Chinese.

Somewhere on the forum is a photo I posted of a gorgeous Peranakan courtyard with carved panels. But this one is also nice, a partition in the Cheong Fatt Tze House in Penang:

    Thank you both.

[OFF TOPIC] Sigh. When will we be able to revisit these places...? [/OFF TOPIC]
