Featured Chinese Shadow Box

Okay, I'm going to go ahead and say it because one of these days I have to be right. Here goes: I think it's old. It's signed by the artist on the vase. It's real jade, coral and tiger's eye. The vase stand and the symbols are carved wood. It's a rosewood frame. The glass is hand cut (see the edges). And stitching is hand done. Well, what say you? (Don't worry, I didn't spend out of my comfort zone.)

 

Looks like a Pier One import from the 60/70's,stones,wood,metal top piece have poor carving and finish.

From what I understand, you can't carve jade. It's a slow and different process.

 

Im afraid Deb and Holly are correct. I will say you have a nice eye for pretty,if not terribly old (so far).

 

I'm not sure where you got the information about jade,it is no more difficult than most stones.Some types are harder to get a good polish,but the pieces in yours weren't even sanded good before trying to polish.

I must be taking crazy pills, lol? I found the prettiest vintage one I could find that was similar to mine. Can't anyone see the whites and spots of black swirling through the jade on mine? The jade on mine has a see-through essence but the dark background prevents me from capturing it well. Also, the backing on mine is the same as the wood frame (velvet/other backings on the vintage examples). If anyone can find a more comparable vintage one, I'd like to see it. Thank you!

 

Not exactly comparable but appears to be (roughly) same era.

This coral flower is gorgeously carved.

Aaroncab, I saw that example. Notice it has a felt back - not a rosewood back like mine. I've searched eBay until I'm blue in the face. I've seen just about all of them. They are also black lacquer, not dark rosewood (mine is dark rosewood but may have been a bit lighter at one time. Stain darkens over time.) Also, notice how pink all the 'coral' on those are? They appear to have been painted to me. Mine is not. Thank you for sharing those links.

 

Thanks for the link. Again, it's a fabric matting. Compares with the one on the left. As is with all the vintage ones, the "coral" is too pink and looks painted.
