Hoping silver "colored" counts for this forum...

They were in a box with sewing supplies. I'm thinking vintage rather than antique, probably steel. Could not find another pair online with an etched decoration along these lines. Curious if anyone else has run across similar. There is sort of a square (maker's mark?) this is on both blades. Let me know if you have any ideas of age, any translation, etc. Thanks!

These look like old fashion flower snipping shears, also used for bonsai.
I suppose they could be used for anything a person wanted including sewing or embroider.

But with that handle - first thought is garden shear.

The design looks like it was made with an electric pencil engraver , so I'd guess it's a one of a kind meant to personalize the tool.

Looks like Pat nail them - Bonsai shears.

Believe the full name of this style of shears is called ASHINAGA BONSAI SHEARS.

I'm not sure these were personalized. I have now seen other Bonsai shears with flowers and chinese or Japanese characters engraved on them. It seems most of the manufactuers engraved the characters for their name just below the screw or on a blade. Following is a pair of these shears with the engraved oriental characters and flowers. It seems many of these shears are made in China as well as Japan.

Wow, thanks Pat and Susan. I appreciate the link to another etched pair.

I was originally thinking Chinese on these -- happened to have a high school student over who is studying Chinese and she felt they were Chinese characters, but "simplified" I think she said. (If anyone can read Chinese, please let me know.)

Glad to have a comparable with the etching, I looked high and low for another online, could not find one.

Thank you so much for the help.

This is Chinese, not Japanese. Indeed, it's marked "Please Use Domestic Products," which was a common Chinese slogan in the '20s-'30s-'40s against Japanese imports.

It says it's a genuine Zhang Xiao Quan pair of scissors. Zhang Xiao Quan, established 1663 and still in business, is one of China's most famous old businesses, making scissors and knives.

To be certain this particular pair is in fact genuine you'd have to ask a Chinese scissors expert.

It's also marked with the nickname of the individual who made it, θ€εŒδΈ Lao Shuang Zhong.
