Don't own this yet and only have this 1st pic (store was about to close and didn't have time to take more/better pics).

The bottom looks a bit like the one of this 2nd (internet) photo, with a fot rim with a rough finish and specks of colour

but the bottom (not the rim) of the pot is coloured red, painted a bit like this
    Internet2.jpg
There's no mark on the bottom.
Is it possible to tell by this single photo (and the added info) if this is old/new? Would this originally have a lid? And what kind of pot is this?

(And yes, this might look familiar to those who checked another site with antiques. That's what happens when this site goes offline. People get desperate, and try to find other solutions for their daily fix of antiques :arghh:)

Chinese storage jar. A lot of these were exported to SE Asia, which is probably how it ended up in NL (through Indonesia).
Some of them are 17th century, but this could be a later one. Without seeing the inside and the base, it is a tentative 19th century from me.

If the price is right, buy.

Forgot about this one. (All the excitement of the site being back up:hilarious:)
Given the decorated rim, this probably had a plug instead of a lid. The plug was usually fitted with a cloth, so it fit snugly in the jar.
It is a storage jar for food or drink, and a plug kept the tropical bugs out much better than a lid.
