Saw this at a consignment shop. It was a bit pricey so I wanted to check opinions on age and if it is something interesting. No gilt on the copper wires. Wonder if they were never gilded or the finish washed out?
    Thanks

It is a recent, low-quality piece so I'm guessing gold didn't fit into the maker's budget. The terrazzo-like filling is new to me, another reason to vote recent. Air pockets and little defects are all over this piece. If it is priced over $10., I'd go into the "leave-er-right" mode.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I see Mr. Spring's points and find them educational... makes sense. It would take an impulsive bird-perv like me to have-to-have it. And I love it. I'd pay 30-40 if I had cash in my purse and needed a lift. Yes, I would.

    Thanks for the replies.
Are not recent cloisonne pieces better quality? With the improved technologies I'd expect Chinese workshops to produce better cloisonne nowadays.
As far as I know quality of the export pieces were on the poor side during the late Qing and Republic period. Of course, they made good products during those periods as well.
There is tons of recent cloisonne that is gilded and selling for cheap. So, I don't think gold would be a budget problem.
    Can't speak of the filling.
Air holes. Good Qing pieces should have none or very few. I guess pitting was more common for some Republic cloisonne. Ming pieces should have plenty of enamel imperfections, broken wires etc.
Finally, in my opinion the eagle may not be super old but I do believe to have some age.
    Hope to hear more opinions.

So, Kards, not sure what u r saying there, but to give that bird a quality score relative to other cloisonné I've seen, I'd give it about 3 on a scale of 10. The low quality is pretty obvious to anyone. Age is a little harder to know and if you think it has "some age" I wouldn't argue.

Did you see this one? It was priced at $99.00 and didn't get a bite. Knowing that might help you make your decision.

    Thanks a bunch.
Don't know what to think. Maybe one is a replica of the original. But which one?
There are surely differences between the two pieces.
The Ebay one has different colors, gilt, different base metal and no dragons under the wings.
    Hmm

Maybe I should try my luck with this charger from the auction tomorrow. Any idea what those creatures at the rim are supposed to be?

Do you know the maker's mark?
    Is it Chinese or Japanese?
