I have bought this chinese bronze mirror hoping it was old. But i can´t get a date on it because no one seems to know the date of these mirrors. I do know they made them in de Tang and Ming and Qing period. It is a Whopper of 37 cm wide and 6 kilo heavy and it does function as a mirror because i can see myself in it at the part that is still shiny.

It has a concave polished front side and the back is decorated. It is the so called 5 sons mirror witch can be read from the chinese caracters with the meaning that Dou Yujun had five sons who all passed the state examination and attained high positions at court. If anyone knows the age of the mirror i would love to hear it. IMG_20240809_102309589.jpg 11.jpg 30.jpg

Unfortunately, no experts were really needed in your case, just an image search on aliexpress. Translation: reproduction, selling at 5 to 6 dollars. I don’t think AJ is mad at you, she’s just tired of all the argument, as when it comes to Chinese and other non-western culture antiquities you become a bit delusional.

Hunt-CeCeBa's one of our Chinese specialists-but I can't remember her exact name (and I admit to such fearlessly-ready to be humbled and corrected).
    PS-Thanks Shamster.

The truth is that any seller on the internet wrongly dates bronze chinese mirrors and here is one that is clearly modern and more modern that mine. Mine has deffently got age but pinpointing a correct manufacture date is impossible as i have found out by multiple seller on the internet. But i just may be delusional. 99.jpg Well i had enough about the mirror because i rather have something that is easy to date. So i traded with a good fiend my mirror for a roman worked volcanic stone of 30 kilo's. he has dug the stone up himself. it could also be older. What do guys think.

Unfortunately I don’t have the knowledge to add something meaningful. But I was hoping other more knowledgeable members would comment as this could be interesting (and I like stones)

Does the size and weight makes sense if it was a ‘complete’ stone? Also where did you friend dig up? (Just for interest sake)

Well it is a huge stone maybe heavier than 30 kilo's and i was told that it could be a roman millstone but to me it does not make sense because the stone is not realy broken but chiseled on all sides and the half round hole is very primitive chiseled out. It was found in Nijmegen. IMG_20240819_094031554.jpg
