Hi everyone!.....This is a Thrift store find from a couple of yrs ago....it is a very nice Chinese mask that I believe to be made of Rosewood....but I'm not entirely sure of this or its age....its approx. 18 in in length...so its a good size and is a little heavy..... 20190924_192141.jpg 20190924_205328.jpg 20190924_210046.jpg 20190924_205115.jpg 20190924_205126.jpg 20190924_205042.jpg 20190924_205026.jpg 20190924_205417.jpg

...sometimes something just gets 'lost'-- if a person doesn't have an immediate comment, they might think, I'll come back to that one, and, well, you know.

I like it. Why do you think it's an antique?

Unfortunately I don’t have much knowledge to be helpful. But I do like it alot. The rich ‘deep’ colour of the wood and the fine little details on the headrest. Also the apparent size of it is impressive and looks heavy. Looks well made and of good age to me. Not sure it’s antique, but I would certainly have guessed vintage.

Looks like the wood is a light color which has been stained. The cracks and missing areas appear to be near white in the photos.

yes the eyes are painted.....I've seen a couple of similar masks at estate sales but they were half the size of this one

the chipped area at the end of the beard is a lighter color......but the cracks....I'm not sure but could be do to the dust.....there is lots of it.......I didn't take time out to dust it before taking the pics

I've seen a lot of these, and had some; made in China I believe for the souvenir/export market, as a wall-hanging; and available in a lot of countries. The wood is not rosewood, which would have a much more obvious and rather streaky grain-pattern; but some sort of stained hardwood. The eyes on mine were inlaid, small pieces of bone with painted pupils.
The ones I got from my parents would date to the 1960s, but styles haven't changed from then to the present day.
