Screenshot_20180322-200745.jpg I bought a small wood chair at an estate sale in the New Orleans French Quarter. It has no maker markings, made with only two nails I can find, and the seat is only 19 inches high and 19 wide. It has strange markings, the main one looks like an abstract dragon to me. I would greatly appreciate any info about this unique chair. 20180322_213328.jpg 20180322_213348.jpg Screenshot_20180322-212942.jpg 20180322_214333.jpg Screenshot_20180322-200745.jpg

    Welcome to the forum!

What a nice looking chair. If you could add more photos, it might be more helpful for others to help. I’d say showing the construction and close ups of designs. Great job with pics so far.

Im just guessing here, but I think its chinese, possibly 1960s,and you dont give dimensions but maybe for a child? I cant recall seeing one this color, usually they are darker, maybe it was refinished at some point? Im just an amateur so take what i say in that spirit. And welcome aboard ! I lived on Bienville in the quarter for a year, wild and amazing time. :)

Howdy. It's built like a hall chair, and if I were to take a wild guess I'd say Chinese or at least strongly influenced by same.

I don't quite agree with it's age at 1960s, I think it could be possibly in the republic period(1911 - 1949). I love these kind of tenon joint structure chinese furnitures without using any nails and glue.
BTW, the strange marking you mentioned here, upload_2018-3-23_21-23-10.png I cannot tell what it exactly is, but it is not a dragon for sure. It looks like bamboo or vines, but I would like to think it is a family marking(or clan marking). Because I saw familiar marking(totally different pattern) on another chair which once belonged to a notorious Bandit during early 1950s.

These are two symmetric bats. upload_2018-3-23_21-23-59.png

Last, this chair is full size and should not be for human to sit. It should be placed beside Alter table, and is used for worship ancestors.

PS: Check the material of this chair, the material is always the most important for Chinese furniture.
