Here's a little piece I found today, can't guess if it's old or made by someone's 12 year in Oaxaca ? It's 3 1/4 " long & appears to be terracotta,it's got holes to blow & holes to hang.

    All opinions welcome. KAT1.jpg KAT2.jpg KAT3.jpg KAT4.jpg

    Whit-It does Whitsle.
PS-Just in case anyone out there wants to read a very weird story about blowing on a whistle, try 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad' by M.R. James.

Well...it sounds risqué, on its face. But on your recommendation, I'll risk it.

Wikipedia summarized the plot...that was enough for me.
An early 20th C Ghost story with a flaccid denouement...Yawn!
    Thanks for the offer, though...

It's a pretty strange short story, but bear in mind it was penned during the Edwardian Era so danged subtle compared to some of the modern stuff.
PS-Whit you've seen your fair share of tribal antiques, what do you think of the Whistle-Old ? New ? Who the hell knows ?

Looks like a monkey to me. Dewi agrees, says it looks nothing like her.:cat:

    AJ-You've got great instinct & knowledge w/ Tribal art,what do you think-old,new, origin ?
Could be a practice piece carved frm a soft stone or low fired.
PS-Nature Hippy tripping on the source w/ a dull pocket knife ? we need more emojis here.

It has age, but that's all I can say about it. Mexicans do make a lot of pottery whistles, so it could be Mexican.
Dewi is my kitty companion.;) Indonesian name, sounds like Davey, except with a w.
When she first came home I still wasn't sure whether she would have an Indonesian name or a Frisian one, Nynke. Then one of my neighbours asked her name, and I just said Dewi (oopss). So Dewi it is.:playful:
Both Dewi and Nynke are Goddess names btw, so she's blessed either way.

Most folks aren't aware that all cats have three names, AJ...the name we assign them, the name other cats call them...an' the name they have for themselves. It's an important small thing to keep in mind.

It may just have some age on it...hell for crude, but still evocative (an' I'm goin' with monkey vs cat)...an' it howls, so in this case form follows function ain't necessarily so. I have a modest collection of whistles around here, somewhere...but only a couple or three are clay, an' one of them is English, MCM. If & when I stumble over them, I'll post some pics.

Not all cats, Dewi doesn't get to meet other cats, she's scared of them.
She was a panicky stray kitten. During the first few months, whenever I moved, even reaching over to pick up my glass, I had to do so very slowly or she'd be terrified. I became very Zen.;)
She is a very sweet kitty though, and loves to cuddle.

I note, after a 3rd or 4th look, that when in use, the monkey appears to offer itself in a supplicatory posture; that in turn suggests a potentially ritualistic purpose underlying its creation...whadya think?
