I am trying to identify the style and manufacturer of a cast iron planter urn that has been missing from a local cemetery for decades. The lot dates to the 1850s, but include remains from the 1840s, so this missing urn may date back to the early 1800s and most likely the 1840s-50s. The only clue I have is that the base of the urn is still here (see photo) - it measures about 15" square and the diameter of the center hole is about 7.25". The lettering shown is the only marking on either side. If we can find out what was originally there, we can look for a replacement, so all help is appreciated!

    Ok....let's get real...

a longshot......fer sure...but you leave out so much information as to hinder our research and make it a real longshot !!

    Which cemetery
    where
where was the base found....on the ground.....in a mausoleum .... next to a grave marker??????

is there anything else you already know about this item that we don't , that could help us?????

I thought there might be some hope of finding a match with that unique marking on your base. It is one I have not seen before, despite having viewed hundreds of Victorian cast iron garden urns. Unfortunately, using those key words, I was unable to find a match. Perhaps someone with better sresearch skills can find something. Otherwise, this will be nearly impossible to find.

At first glance it looks like it reads “THE URN” but I believe it actually reads “J.W.F. URN” for J.W. Fiske.

I thought it said "The Urn" as well. Might have some luck looking for Fiske.

Yup. I tried looking through Google patents the other night, too. Talk about a headache. That site does not render well on a cell phone screen. That is a special kind of hell, lol.
