I've got another whatsit (my favorite thing to buy sometimes).

This thing is 21" tall with a 2 1/2" square base. There's one hole in the pole near the top.

Base is green painted cast iron. Pole appears to be fibreglass.

My guesses have been flag pole and artificial Christmas tree base. Neither one explains the little screwed on tab on the base. Or why there are 2 different sized holes in the base for screwing it down?

    Any ideas? Thanks for looking!

May just be a marriage of the 2 parts used for an unknown reason. That's too intricate of a casting just to put a pole in it. IMO

I thought it might be a miniature version of something, explaining the detail.

It occurred to me that the holes in the base are probably different sizes because one sits on a pin and the larger hole is for a screw to attach it to something.

We have one and we used to tamp things down. We used it last fall when we filled the cracks in the driveway with asphalt. It really packs it down and makes it flat. I don't know the "proper name".

    Hi,
The proper name is a "tamper".

The questions is - why make the casting in 2 pieces and then attach them together?
The tamper casting would be one piece with no cores for ease of casting them. The OP casting looks to be made with cores (cores create the hollow spaces inside the casting).
Is this piece flat on the bottom or does it have an opening. (Any chance to get a pic of the bottom?)

The bottom isn't flat and it isn't nearly as big as any tampers I've seen.

    Hi,
    Nope, not a tamper.

Could it be an antenna mount?
