Carved wood and brass asian elephant - where from? India? Thailand? China? Indonesia?

This little fellow caught my eye and I couldn't resist him for a buck. Some type of black wood - Brass or bronze saddle blanket/pad which is actually attached with small brass nails/tacks (about 28 of them) The eyes are also brass/bronze. He's about 5" long. I know he's not too high class, but any clues to where he was made? I'm assuming southeast asia somewhere - maybe China.

I'd leave out China, and I am inclined to think India.
No, he is not high class, but he is very cute. I would have bought him for a buck. I have this elephant thing ever since I read that the Dutch confiscated my Indonesian ancestors' herd of elephants as part of punitive measures against their fight for freedom. They have not yet returned them to me (it's been over 200 yrs), so I occasionally buy small elephant related things as consolation. This little guy would fit right in.
