    In the process of doing a house clearance and found these in the shed.
    I thought they might be decorative cannons but they are usually brass and have a hole and barrel.
    These are solid iron no holes although they do appear to have trunnions, they weigh 15 llbs (6.8kg ) each.
    There were no carriages or wheels present
    The owner does not remember them.

    No identifying marks.

    I left my big feet in the pic for size comparison.

    They sure look like cannons,maybe they were just decorative ? You know the victorians didn't believe in leaving something unadorned! I could see those on an old sea captains monument.

    No, the bit that goes into the mould, they cast two halves in bronze.
    They were mounted on the rails and used like a small cannon / big gun for firing small cannon balls

    Either that or kiddy weights, to keep the small children from squirming around while Daddy is trying to work. That may not have been the original purpose, but they'd work.

    Decorative cannons. They were not made to be fired, the trunnions are too slender to hold up even to firing blank charges.

    My late father in law designed signalling cannons for the Royal Navy.

    I don’t know what the RN used for salute guns but USN uses these Mark XI salute guns, with no trunnions. These were made to order by a Navy industrial activity that once existed in Louisville, KY. They are cut-down and modified WWII 40mm anti-aircraft guns. The steel or aluminum cartridge case holds about one pound of black powder. These guns are very noisy.

    <snort>

    Pa in law designed a three inch portable saluting gun. We went on HMS Belfast with him once, tour guide was a bit worried when Pa starts to take their saluting gun apart. When we explained he'd designed the thing, they were absolutely enchanted.

    I'll see if I can find an image.
