I know what the Jambiya is but I don't not know how old it is? The snake dagger is harder to figure out. I dont even know if it's bronze or stone. I have not been able to find any exaples. Are these both tourist quality items or something more. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you

  4. I purchased them in a auction. I have not received them yet. I would take better photos if I had them. Do you really think the snake dagger could be a letter opener?

it's not any type of dagger I'm familiar with...... so far.

The snake knife is probably a Cambodian amulet knife.
They come in many different shapes, I haven't seen this particular one yet, but they all have that artificial verdigris (green crust) and a lot of symbolism.
Snakes are important in both Hindu-Buddhist mythology and in folk medicine and protection.

Cambodian amulet knives are inspired by Dong Son, Khmer and other antique and ancient bronze daggers, which are found at archaeological sites. Due to having been in the earth for centuries, many of those daggers have natural verdigris, which is copied in the amulet knives.
The link with historical periods is like the link with ancestors whose spirits (souls) are able to protect a person. Bronze is also protective and stands for strength.

The jambiya will need a lot of TLC, but should come out beautiful.
This type looks like it is a Yemeni thouma or tuza, carried by Sayeds, descendants of the Prophet. They are also carried by important legal professionals like judges.

I love jambiyas, they are probably my favourite non-spiritual daggers. I never buy them though, because of the rhino horn hilts most old ones have.

The price for (seemingly older) Jambiyas is very uneven.I wonder if the older hilts were made out of anything other than endangered rhino horn ? Very nice form.

They were, but most were rhino horn, and I read that some still are. Some were ivory, another problem material, and some were other types of horn.
This particular one is one I would have avoided, I have my suspicions. I could be wrong though.

Rhino horn can be a lighter colour, exactly like this one. I guess we'll have to wait until Joanne has received it and posts extra pics.
