    Hello,
I'm still in the long process of sorting through my grandparents things. Have come across this painting today (which I can't say I ever remember seeing on display) and wondered if anyone had any insight? The carved frame is very interesting.

The back of the canvas says 'G Rowney and co , London W quality A'

As always, any help is greatly appreciated as I sort through the never-ending treasure boxes! WhatsApp Image 2023-04-24 at 09.52.25.jpeg WhatsApp Image 2023-04-24 at 10.01.31.jpeg

That san-serif stamp appears to date from the early 20th century. That would be consistent with frame.

Stamp refers to the canvas only. Painting is a character sketch. Quite often done by students as they hone their skills. Done by other artists as they work up a composition. Fairly competent but will be nearly impossible to attribute with only initials.

Wonder if that's not a reproduction of a newspaper illustration or cigarette card. Agree re initials.
