I am asking about this for a friend who owns this thistle pin and is asking for help with the marks on the back...

Because of the thistle I guessed it might be Scottish, but couldn't interpret the marks...

After reading that Scottish silver marks often included a lion, I was inspired to turn the picture upside down and now the left mark looks like a lion to me...

So, now it looks to me like a lion, a trefoil, and a script "L"...what do they look like to you and/or do you know what they indicate? Thanks!

Might be Chester silver made by Charles Horner. He made many Scottish style pieces. I can see an H there. Wait for others to chime in though.

Had a look around and think it is Horner. The lion denotes it is silver, the shield is Chester, the other will be the date letter and CH for Charles Horner.

I think it's interesting the different images that show up in the inverted image versus the regular image.....

first image..do you see the herd of what looks like reindeer to the LEFT????

But here.....flipped the other way, it looks more like a Scottie dog........?

@Houseful, I edited the second image and outlined what I "thought" looked somewhat like a 'Scottie' dog.......not everyone may see what I sometimes do!!

Late to this, but definitely Horner, it's a well known design. I've got one somewhere. Not 1949, there's feet on that mark, which Y doesn't have. Way too late anyhow. And the lion is wrong for the 1940s. Cartouche shape is not always an indicator - for some mad reason, they don't always correspond. It's most likely to be one of the 1910s marks, but badly struck/rubbed.

Thank you all for the expert help. Thanks to your help my friend found on Etsy this similar brooch, which you see the seller attributed to Horner...

I'm very wary of "unsigned" Horner. Even the wee bits had CH on them. Not all have full hallmarks: I've some which say STERLING and CH.
