Hello Board Buddies - I was sitting there minding my own business at our local auction when somehow a box lot ended up in my lap. This pipe bowl was tucked away inside. It measures about 5 3/4" in length. The opening is about 1 1/2". I think the lady is completely hand painted. If anyone could help me regarding age, origin, etc. it would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone!
    Don

I'd guess it's porcelain. Looks too thin to be meerschaum. And I'd guess the woman to be Turkish, as in Turkish tobacco.

Thank you, komokwa! I had no idea these pipes were so elaborate! I can't imagine trying to bring these back as souvenirs nowadays and having them arrive in one piece.

And thank you, moreotherstuff! Turkish! That was the link I was missing to understand the decoration.

Thank you, cluttered. This is the first one I've ever run across in the thirty years or so I've been in business. Or at least the first one that I noticed. I think that's why I found it so confusing. I was a bit negligent in not doing better research before I posted. I would have realized what the whole pipe most likely looked like and that it was missing a lid. (You are right, komokwa, there is some roughness around the rim where a lid would have been). Some of the pipes in your links above really are works of art, cluttered. Yet another fascinating area I didn't even know existed. Thanks, folks, for sharing.

The girl is probably an Orientalist fantasy, based on Middle Eastern (notably Persia) or North African women's dress. Some European Gypsy women used to wear turbans as well.
She reminds me a bit of this Orientalist portrait by Bernard Claris (1815-1857)

Hello Any Jewelry! Orientalism is one area of art that I can't decide is to my taste or not. I rather like the romantic images and the wonderful textures but there is also an element of realism in the style/depictions that strikes a false note with me. As with so many things I've decided it's not an area where I really need to make up my mind. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Don, yes it makes sense. I love it, but that is probably my love of the subjects painted. Some Orientalists worked in a more Impressionist-like style, I prefer that. One of my favourites is the Dutch painter Marius Bauer, I have two of his etchings. This is by Bauer (not mine):

Just googled Bauer, and found an etching I have as well, "the Domes of Stamboul" (Istanbul). Made in 1889:

I hadn't been exposed to Bauer before. You can see the transition in styles. Fascinating! Thank you.
