Hello everyone. This is my first post, after years of reading and occasionally commenting and lots of liking! I hope I do this right.
I bought this painting (recently) from a local online auction. I love it, but apparently no one else did, because I was the only bidder. When I picked it up, I was told that the man (an older gentleman) whose painting this was told them it was a wedding gift to his grandparents. I think this makes it from the 30's or 40's, but that's just a guess.
It was framed under glass so I really thought it must be a print, so this was a nice surprise.
Size is 16x20. I can't find a signature, but hoping someone here can!

Well, I screwed up! The pics are in the gallery. I tried emailing them to myself to make them smaller, but no go! I'll try to add them in comments, and if that doesn't work I'll just try again later. So sorry!

You can use the little camera icon in the Reply box toolbar to embed the pictures in your gallery album into a post.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@lovewrens, I selected an area along the bottom of the picture....and lightened it....in the middle, and on the right side darkened it a bit.... it's only a 'possibility' there 'could' be a signature along there, but if there is, it's a bit blurry....do you think you could try two clear images close-up, of just along the bottom....in the middle and along the right??? I will try to see if there's anything there.....HA!!! Helps if I show where I mean....NOT the light part on the LEFT  :

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

    interesting story....
painting looks older but the cheap store bought frame and amateur framing...hiding the boat and top of the lighthouse , looks very recently done.

Agree frame not contemporary to work but I think mat cropping effectively done. Hides the discoloration and brings focus on the young girl which adds to charm. (If it were mine, I'd do the same thing.)

The image reminds me of illustration art done for commercial product labels and advertising. It's definitely an artist that was still learning. The squiggle next to the boat might be a monogram.

Yes, I agree. Because of that, I would expect a print, not an oil.

I'm back and sorry to say, didn't find as much as I'd hoped for........in both instances the inverted image is above and your original (but cropped down) is below.....First & Middle image had some indications of writing, but not really anything I could define; Second and Right image there really wasn't anything there to find, at least not by me! You might want to pursue taking it to a professional to look further at the center section, if you think it's worth it!! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.....

I see something there as well, but it's so dirty! The dirt may be hiding it. I think I will try to clean it up a bit myself since it was only $2.00. I do love it though, so I will be very gentle with it. Thank you so much for your help.

ONCE again, @lovewrens, IN the basket, on the fish tail area ABOVE, the HIGHER fish in the basket, there IS some writing.....I was able to contrast it more, but it's still not great.......I copied & pasted above, right in the image with a drop shadow all around it......I stare at this stuff too long!!! Possibly someone else can make a bit more out of it!!! Looks like it might start with GA...something, and there "could be a date along in there, but SO NOT sure...........
