Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Hi...found this at the bottom of my Mom's sewing "basket" just recently....first....is it a real cameo, like I think it is, and second any idea as to age? And when I peeled of the price tag that's been there Lord only knows how long....I found the number there....it's also a very uneven back and looks like shell......and about 1/2" across...... Edit....THANKS again for any and all help in advance!!!!:happy::happy::happy::happy::happy:

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It looks like shell -- and I think 19th century, possibly even a bit older. Her hairstyle reminds me of mid-19th century. But that is not a foolproof way to tell, especially with cameos of women in classical style.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Dramatic profile... no nose-bridge at all... does that nose-shape have a name?

She's real. Carved somewhere near Naples, and any time from the mid 19th on. Lots were exported to be mounted in silver or gold frames.

I'd have called it a Roman nose. Hmm.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    *Googling both*

Edit - seems to be some overlap... and equivalence in some's eyes... but Roman is more aquiline, or slightly hooked, as the beak of an eagle (Aquila)... Grecian is more straight-ish?

I agree with GG. If you google Roman nose cameos and Grecian nose cameos many of the same ones come up. I always thought, which is certainly not gospel, ancient Grecian noses were depicted as straight with hardly a bridge while ancient Roman noses were depicted with a bump, aquiline.
