Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I bought a lot containing 22 photos recently. I was mostly looking for photos from my great-grandfather's studio. Turns out there were identifications on some, and I'll plan to find family members. But these are unidentified and I don't think they resemble the ID'd people so don't know what to do with them.

If interested in having these please post a follow up to this post. I'll wait until this Friday or so to gather names, and if more than one person expresses interest I will draw a name... I ask that the person who gets these pays the shipping cost.

Thanks -- they would like to be adopted!

    Hi Fig,
Would you tell us your G Grandfathers studio name so we can look out for you?

Greg, I have automated searches in eBay that find the photos from his studio. Otherwise, unless somebody is in Michigan where he lived, they come up rarely anywhere else.

Here is a thread I started a while back with a photo from his studio. You know, I try to be relatively anonymous in this board, but I have posted on several genealogical boards, years ago, looking for photos from his studio. And you yourself have my name from a kindness you did for me a couple of years ago (during the "milk glass incident" :)). Once you all start googling, I beg you please not to include my name in any posts here.

    Hi Fig,
I NEVER reveal names here so you are safe. I justed wanted his studios' name. You would be suprised at the amount of out of state photos around here. I usually go through a lot of them at shows. At our shows there are a lot of postcard dealers that handle photos also.

Thank you! Yes, I know they can travel. I have very rarely found one from that studio for sale online, except on eBay. However, once I found one on the website of a dealer in Florida. They overcharged me, too. However, at that time I didn't have many from that studio so I bought it. Nowadays I have about 40 or so, and am more picky on how much I will pay.

Love the baby photos, Fig. I'm tempted to put my name in the hat, but have too much stuff already. :)

Were the exposures pretty quick for these types of photos? I'd think so for a baby to stay in focus?

I've heard that exposures were a lot quicker by the 1890s than they were earlier in the century. And I think all of these are from the 1890s. But also, babies were often put into a position of being sort of nestled. The second baby on the fur looks like that. Also, they often had adults hidden under or behind them, holding them in place. You may be familiar with what are called "hidden mother" photos in which you can see the hand, arm, or part of the body of the (partly) hidden person holding on to the baby. These don't have any of that... which is too bad, because some people collect those!

And now I am wondering whether the first individual baby photo above might have the edge of a woman's skirt sticking out from the right back side of the chair? It is hard to tell if it's a clothing skirt or part of the chair.

Hmmmmm...... That is an odd chair for one but are you thinking there are holes through the back of it?
    Could Be....

I do believe you may be right, Fig. The fabric and angle look totally different than the chair itself. As King said, maybe the mother's hands are going through the chair somehow.

Even with an adult holding an infant, I'm still surprised that everything looks in focus. Maybe they just had to do lots of multiple takes from when a baby turned his/her head or waved a hand, etc.

Or maybe squirmy, very active babies didn't get their pictures taken!

I was not thinking of holes through the back... although I suppose that could be the case, especially if the chair was made for photography. I was just wondering about the potential skirt.

It may be that the adult was holding on to the baby until just a second before the photograph was taken, and then popped down behind the chair? That would be taking a chance that the baby would move, but... maybe.

No reason to not build or modify a chair to have holes in it too. :)

Not asking to be in the drawing -- just wanted to say that the first photograph (father(?) with happy standing baby) is absolutely the most adorable photograph I have seen in a long time.

Looks like KingofThings is the only name in the hat, so he gets the photos. Check your messages, King -- I just sent you one.
