I think the term 'Brutalist' is over/mis-used in context of pieces like this, but I didn't know what else to call it.

I thought it interesting, but I'd appreciate your honest opinions.

Is this really bad or actually thoughtful? ...or maybe both?

It's 12" tall (30cm), appx 3"x4" wide / deep, and is not signed.

I found it in a resale shop here in Portland Oregon, a place that sometimes has good stuff for pretty cheap.

    Thank you.

    It IS pretty...Slab-y.
I look at things like that as an expression of the artisan's mood an' humor...their state of mind...an' the more 'brutal' they appear, the greater my discomfort in the realization that very few folks with similar 'brutal' mindsets have the creative ability to give tangible expression to their anguish...an' so channel their torment into far less socially acceptable behavior, public or private. Think about it.

Thanks for the comment whit. I agree with you that it seems "an expression of the artisan's mood an' humor...their state of mind..."

This piece has a different pattern of 'pieces' on each side, as it's built up from bottom to top, so it seems like it's making overt the maker's process and thoughts.

Hmmn . . . I don't care for most "brutalist" pieces. Probably because of what whittier said.

Definitely a hand-built slab Brutalist piece w/ a charred glaze.Vaguely reminds me of Voulkos, but Voulkos took it to an extreme.

Definitely better than taking a sniper rifle up into a bell tower or machete on a subway. Not sure how many 'Brutalist' artists stripped of their talents would become hooligans or homicidal, interesting theory though.

A rather interesting, slightly disturbing but thought provoking opinion. Thanks

Personally I don’t like the vase much. Makes me think of something that’s halfway in the middle of nowhere..
