    Good day
What can you tell about this little (4-5 cm) sheet brooch.
I cant find any mark on it, it is not magmnetic and does not smell like metal could it be silver , sommige from the 50's or later? 20211213_171711-0_copy_960x432.jpg 20211213_171823-0_copy_432x960.jpg 20211213_171759-0_copy_432x960.jpg 20211213_171739-0_copy_960x432.jpg

    Hi, Hi.;)
It looks a few decades (decennia) earlier to me, 1910s.

It looks like the initials S L to me, in cursive script. The flowers could be dogwood or forget-me-not.

I thought it looked a bit like an M, but maybe I have my reasons for thinking that.;)

According to the evidence of the orientation of the pin & which strokes of writing are on top of others, assuming it was written left to right, the brooch is meant to go this way up:

    So it is. W?
And given the sentimentalism of the period, I'd say forget-me-nots.

Dogwood flowers have 4 petals, so not dogwood :)

I understand why you ask that Bronwen. No she was not left handed. So its a W? Or J Or H?

It's really a puzzle. The fit with grandma's name when seen as SL is a confounding factor. Depending on orientation, the one part clearly looks like an L or a T. The other side does not look like a letter to me at all, although it does vaguely look like an S when it's what I think is upside down. And I don't think it is one big letter, a W or an M. Mind, I'm really bad at deciphering monograms, etc. However, there is concrete evidence that the brooch is meant to be positioned with the flowers at the bottom.

The orientation of the clasp would necessitate the pin being worn with the flowers on the bottom... otherwise, it would be in danger of falling off the wearer.
    I'm thinking simply a somewhat style-ized W?

Just wondering..does it have to be a letter/initial at all ? Or just a design.?
