Hi everyone! Bought this at auction recently, listed only as "interesting heavily embossed bronze jug". I'm hoping you can help me figure out age and origin- I'm thinking Roman-esque rather than Greek? I have done a little research but I'm really not sure of age- I'm leaning towards an antique repro-souvenir of the Grand Tour maybe? Any and all info appreciated! It is 7.5"H x 4.5"W. Thanks as always!

Beauty,I'd always lean toward Grand Tour for safety's sake, and of course much Grand Tour was wonderfully done. How bout we ask our antiquities experts- first one comes to mind is @Any Jewelry

A very cool looking thing. Does look to have some honest age and a Roman motif (in my very limited knowledge opinion) I would have also thought ‘antique’ museum replica.

I can't see any of the ornamentation well enough to have a go at identifying figures or action.

Wondering whether bottom is a replacement.

Elen-I love it and I'd buy Grand Tour all week long (but a classical period piece would be okey-dokey too !).
This is the only pic I could find quickly of the base of an Etruscan culture 5th century BCE Bronze Oinochoe. It was offered by Setdart Auction House February 01, 2022 Barcelona, Spain-unsold.Was it genuine (???).

Thanks for this, I couldn't find a picture of a period piece base!

In the world of bronze oinoche, as supplied by Google, your vessel is unusual in 2 things: the color of the patina, so olive green with no hint of blue-green; being encircled by relief figures for decoration. Are the figures repousse' or applied? It looks more as though it was copied from a pottery piece.

I don't think the figures are applied, but they could be- how do I tell? I took a bit of a look on the inside with my flashlight and it is rough looking around the rim! I can't see any indication of the figures from the interior.

On another look, I think the figures were cast along with the rest of it. So far have not been able to make any sense of it. Often it is little details that identify a figure.

Yes it appears they were a part of the mold.

I dearly wish museums would have more views of their items (even 3-d scans).I know it's expensive, but it would be invaluable to collectors.
PS-Caution,of course museums have repros/forgeries too,but prob less overall than 'Furad's of Turkzuristan's' Ebay page.

An intriguing piece. The figures look very worn, but that could also happen with a cast of an earlier piece.
There is some wear on the handle, but there doesn't seem to be any to the top rim.

Does the verdigris (green stuff) flake or rub off at all?
Ditto. The grey colour looks like solder and it has been filed down rather roughly. The file marks aren't ancient, but they do show a bit of wear.

A bit of a puzzle to me. Do you have a museum or university near you with an archaeology department?

Not likely. The possible buyers probably thought so too, it wasn't sold.;)

Yes, I could try the local university!

The green doesn't flake off put comes off a bit when I scratch it with my nail. There is a lot of the white stuff on the interior rim and feels jagged, is that corrosion? I'll have a get a good pic of it later after work.
