Hello board friends! I bought a bronze inkwell recently and the note inside the well said it was 1880's and from England. I know better than to believe notes so I thought I'd run it by y'all here. One of the screws looks new but the other two look old. It measures 6 3/4" across. All opinions welcome! Thanks!

Oh, so those are separate castings screwed together. It looks like cheap, mass produced castings from either China or India. If that red color by the one screw is "locktite" (a type of thread locker) then your 1880's note is fibbing. But this is just my observations, the glass looks old and crudely made but could be newer and just made that way,,,,,

Could be an older piece. Look at the screw with red stuff on or beside it. Screw slot is buggered and there's verdegris in the slot. Damaged screw couldn't be tightened with screwdriver so someone put the red stuff in to keep screw from falling out. Two brass feet are worn very smooth. The square steel nut underneath looks right. I'm undecided but I don't see any glaring clues pointing to a modern repro verdict.

Quality is lacking for 1880 but think it has some age to it. Maybe Indian for the Western market sometime first half of 20th century.

Thank you all for your opinions. I think what bothered me most was the "painted" bottom. I've only seen that on Indian pieces. I'm leaning towards verybrad's conclusion. I've got a friend who collects inkwells but isn't fussy so I now have a Christmas present. I'll throw the note away. Thanks again everyone.
