    Hi,
According to several monograms that I have, it is upside down and looks like TM.

    Hi,
The W looks upside down when compared to the William and Mary trivet from Williamsburg VA that I have. The L upside down looks like a Capital T. I guess who is looking at it will interpret either way. The way the M or W crosses in the middle is what made me think of T&M not WL.

Would the letters make more sense if what looks like flower heads were the other way ie W L ?

I think the OP had it right the first time. My guess is this was someone's wedding gift or Christmas present circa 1910.
