I acquired a group of antique french medals and while looking them over during cleaning I noticed that the edge of this bronze medal was marked CUIVRE which is apparently French for copper (thanks Google!). After some research I found out that between 1843 and 1880 bronze medals were marked as such, but no explanation as to why. Any insight would be great.

Christopher, I can't tell if you are asking about the following or not, but . . .

did you notice in your second photo what looks to be an "LD" nestled under the ivy on the bottom right side of your photograph? ;)
