This is a very well done brass or bronze Officer Statue. I am assuming it is US but not sure. There is a 7 on the backpack which might mean 7th cavalry but there do not seem to be any other insignias that would indicate this is the case. It does appear there are a set of initials, maybe NTY? on the pouch on his right hip. I believe there used to be a plume sticking up from the front of the cap but unfortunately is no longer. Any ideas on the artist or timeframe or if it is something other than US? It stands 8 1/2" tall. Thanks for your help!

Interesting item, Steve. Got to wonder about some things, though. Like why is he holding a bayonet without a rifle to attach it to? What kind of uniform would include such fancy epaulets? The headgear looks like it has a rosette in front and I don't recall seeing that on other examples of US Civil War outfits.

BTW, that "pouch" on his hip should be for ammo cartridges. The closeup picture doesn't look like NTY to me. Maybe it's the angle?

I would say there's a chance this isn't meant to be a US soldier, although if it is US maybe post-CW?

Maybe this image of the "initials" might be clearer. 1 statue 9.jpg

The more I look at him, the more I think he's European. French, maybe?

The rifle may have come out of the bayonet and then went MIA.

His position on the little plinth is a bit odd.

Did something break off the top front of the hat?

if my pic is correct...nothing is supposed to be there.......so extra metal left from casting would be my guess..

The fringed epaulettes are curious. Usually you see them only on an officer, yet the hat is not an officer's hat. I just scrolled through a lot of uniform images and two other things stand out. The fancy front of the jacket and the scroll detailing on the tail. None of that shows up on Union Army uniforms. I still think it's foreign. Where did you find the image of the hat?

    Invaluable...

Original paper label inside top reads ''Baker & McKenney, Military Goods, 141 Grand Street, NY'', inscribed in ink ''C.E. Aiken, 7th Regt''. Formed in Albany, NY. Mustered in as 113th regiment of infantry: August 18, 1862. Designated 7th regiment of artillery (heavy): December 19, 1862. Mustered out: August 1, 1865.

    Do you think it's a fake ?
