    I've picked up these 3 lanterns in various places over the last year. The first is a Viking lantern - which has has an electric socket installed. It's about 13" tall. It has a corrugated metal reflector on the back panel. The second is unmarked and has a bit more patina on it. It does not have the oil lamp in place. It has a concave brass reflector on the back panel. It's also missing one of the bars on the front. It's about 10 1/2" tall. The last is smaller at about 7" tall. It has an oil lamp insert. It has a glass mirror reflector on the back panel. May any of these actually have been used on a ship at any point - or are they consumer reproductions? Thanks!

    I'd be shocked to learn they were vintage.

    None of them are ship's lanterns. Wrong shape, no bracket or hoisting fitting.

    They look rather too flimsy to be used on any ocean-going vessel.

    So if they are all reproductions, what are they emulating? Is there any other sort of lantern?

    [Feeling inquisitive today, I suppose.]

    I've asked myself the same question :) I've seen a couple of internet sites describe this style of lantern as a "cabin" lantern. Not meant for the sailors to use - but for ship's passengers to use in their rooms. I don't know if this is true - but one possibility.

    Wouldn't lanterns intended for "nautical use" be gimbled?

    Your question reminds me of Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky." We had to memorize that in 9th grade!

    'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
    Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
    All mimsy were the borogoves
    And the mome raths outgrabe.
    [Etc.]

    Scary to think I remember almost the entire poem even now!
