Agree... the real deal. The porcelain insert is probably the original.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I think it looks original, based mostly on the inserts and what I see on the bottom. The topside looks awfully clean.....but then maybe someone just took care of their antiques!!!!

I say real deal too; the casting is too good for modern repop.

Victorian-era brass inkstand. Letter-holder, inkwells and pen-rest. I've seen these sell in antiques shops for hundreds of dollars, but only if they're in really good condition.

Good condition means no cracks, chips, dents, damage, no broken hinges. Lids close properly and smoothly, and the inserts in the inkwells are both present, and matching, and fitting. Often on these things, the inkwell inserts...inkserts...? are the first things to be broken, or mismatched, or just plain missing.

They can sell anywhere from $150 up to $300, $500...it depends on who's selling it and how elaborate it is.

BTW - That fan-shaped lip at the front is probably for dip-pen nibs or similar.

It is the real deal. Not a big deal, though. Still worth a few coins, but had it been gilded...

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    This one https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/38367...leon-iii-bronze-gilt-second-half-19th-century
says era of "Napoleon III" and "Second half 19th century" -- It does say Déposé on the bottom, so it is probably French. Although our late colleague ladybranch commented above that both France and Germany use this sort of mark.
