IMG_1071.JPG IMG_1075.JPG IMG_1069.JPG IMG_1067.JPG I purchased this quaint little brass box, which is stamped with 40 on both the top and the bottom half. Can you date it, and identify it's possible origin? It is apparently solid brass. Non magnetic. It has been polished before. Someone's repurpose it by gluing a bunch of potpourri to the top for whatever reason. Under the potpourri is some kind of a handle held to the box with two brass round pegs. The feet are brass as well, round and smaller than the pegs holding the handle on it. The box itself is perforated with cross-like pattern all the way around(and the lid as well). There is a brass L shaped piece to presumably keep the top from hitting the bottom wen opened.

Looks like a match! I think mine may be borderline "antique" but not sure

In the 1970s, we called those betel boxes. India import.

Agree, they have no business being there. Very few betel users celebrate Christmas.;)
In the 70s you were right, and you still are. It is an Indian betel box, to store betel leaves as part of the betel paraphernalia. The leaves were often stored in a container with holes, to prevent mold.
An explanation on how betel was/is used is in this thread:

Cricket boxes are not Indian, they are Chinese, here are some:
